The Artist.
Milena Muzquiz (born in Tijuana, Mexico) is an American artist living and working between Los Angeles and Mexico. Muzquiz’s work defies a common language, functionality and classification as traditional pottery or material practice. She was educated under Mike Kelley at ArtCenter College of Design and has moved her practice onto the stage as the performance and music duo Los Super Elegantes.
Muzquiz has worked in ceramics for much of her artistic career but says of her renewed interest in painting: ‘The different stages of drying the oil paint can conduct a movement in the piece. It is still all very mysterious to me and exciting to figure out’. Muzquiz has always found visual inspiration in her surroundings, whether it’s the kitschy toys and souvenirs sold at the Mexican border or California surf culture.
Milena Muzquiz has had solo exhibitions at The Tuk Tuk Flower Studio, London (2015); Travesía Cuatro, Madrid, Spain (2014); Travesía Cuatro, Guadalajara, Mexico (2014); Pantaleone Gallery, Palermo, Italy (2010); Interior Projects, Los Angeles, CA (2008) and Deitch Projects, New York (2000). Her work has been presented in individual projects at Frieze New York (2015) and ARCO Madrid (2016).
Muzquiz has participated in group shows at various institutions, galleries and biennials, including: Peter Kilchmann (2015); The 6th Liverpool Biennial (2010); The 28th Bienal de São Paulo (2008); The Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (2007); The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL (2007); The Whitney Biennial, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and MUSAC, Castilla y León, Spain (2016).
