Throughout Dan Colen’s artistic career, he has maintained an interest in exploring the use of non-traditional materials such as dirt, flowers, street trash, metal studs and, in this case, tar and feathers. This exploration of medium originated in 2006 when Colen began applying used chewing gum to canvas rather than paint. He found the use of these unconventional methods liberating as he was obliged to relinquish control and let the materials and their inherent characteristics determine the piece.
Dan Colen was born in 1979 in New Jersey. He received a BFA in 2001 from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, and now lives and works in New York.
