Dickinson is pleased to show a selection of Old Master and Impressionist paintings for Masterpiece Online 2021, with highlights including examples by Reynolds, Zoffany, Renoir and Hassam. Fair visitors will be able to experience this year’s stand through a virtual tour, read in-depth insights on the exhibited works, and watch a short video introducing Dickinson and discussing select pieces in detail. Our galleries will also welcome visitors to view many of the exhibited works first hand at 58 Jermyn Street, in London, and at 980 Madison Avenue, in New York.

Among the Old Master highlights are Ulysses seizing Astyanax from Andromache (c. 1758-59) by German-born Grand Tourist favourite Johann Zoffany, painted just before he moved to London in 1760 and inspired by the classicism of Poussin. Here, Zoffany gives us a dramatic scene from the Trojan War narrative.

The gallery will also show a recently rediscovered Caricature of Lord Bruce, Thomas Brudenell-Bruce, later 1st Earl of Ailesbury; the Hon. John Ward; Joseph Leeson, Jnr, later 2nd Earl of Milltown, and Joseph Henry of Straffan (c. early 1751) by Sir Joshua Reynolds. This witty painting, which gently satirises a group of aristocrats in Rome, shows the lighter side of the Grand Tour and has descended in the family of one of the subjects at a private Irish estate.

New to the market is Robert Lefevre’s portrait of The Emperor Napoleon (1814), in which Bonaparte stands in a Neoclassical colonnade filled with sculpted figures of monarchs and philosophers. This year marks the bicentenary of the death of Napoleon, a ruler whose command of propaganda and imagery was as vital to his success as any military weapon.

Among the Impressionist works featured is Childe Hassam’s bucolic watercolour view Woman Reading (Portrait of Nellie Dubois Boyle) (1885), which depicts the artist’s friend, model and student. Hassam was inspired by the landscapes of watercolour virtuoso J.M.W. Turner during a trip to Europe, and adopted the Impressionist lessons of the importance of painting en plein air.

Dickinson’s virtual stand will also include examples by Sir Peter Lely, Edward Lear, Jacques-Antoine Vallin, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

Masterpiece Online 2021

England’s lockdown has been extended by another four weeks but the background to Masterpiece Online, which runs from June 23 to 27, shows how far we have come since last year. The cross-category fair’s physical event in London has been cancelled for the second time running but, as galleries are open this time around, it can still generate in-person activity.

“This year is a campaign for what people are doing physically,” says chief executive Lucie Kitchener. Recommended gallery tours — either across categories or within specialist fields — will be available via videos and should also help the fair’s digital-only visitors to negotiate its 127 exhibitors (masterpiecefair.com). “It can all be a bit daunting otherwise,” Kitchener says.

Several galleries have works from Masterpiece Online in their actual spaces. At Dickinson, these are spread across the Atlantic. Johann Zoffany’s “Ulysses Seizing Astyanax from Andromache” (c1758-59) will be in its London gallery; Frederick Childe Hassam’s “Woman Reading (Portrait of Nellie Dubois Boyle)” (1885) will be in New York, “with much more besides” for in-person visitors, promises Emma Ward, Dickinson’s managing director.
