Judith Lauand was the only female member of the São Paulo-based Grupo Ruptura, whose 1952 exhibition marked the origins of the Concrete Art movement in Brazil. Working as a printmaker, sculptor and embroiderer as well as a painter, Lauand began incorporating non-traditional materials into her pieces beginning in the 1960s, seeking to achieve a wider range of surface texture.
