Brazilian Rubem Valentim was a self-taught artist who abandoned his career in dentistry to devote himself full-time to the plastic arts. In 1962, a travel fellowship allowed him to spend time in Europe, where he was fascinated by so-called ‘primitive’ art, the term applied by Western scholars to non-western and tribal art. Valentim returned to Brazil in 1966.
