MARTIN KIPPENBERGER : THE POSTERS AND INVITATION CARDS 1977 – 1997

Monday, 5th October – Friday, 30th October 2015

Gallery Hours: Monday – Friday, 10am – 6pm

Dickinson is pleased to present an exhibition of the complete Martin Kippenberger’s posters and invitation cards at our London gallery. This collection will be shown alongside a selection of Kippenberger’s work in other media, including paintings, sculpture and drawings.

Martin Kippenberger (1953 – 1997) was one of the most complex and prolific German artists of his generation. Kippenberger drew inspiration from his contemporaries, modern society, and his own experiences, and his work offers contradictory impressions of these subjects: they are at once absurd, hopeful, tragic, charming and bleak. Very much an artist’s artist, Martin Kippenberger had many of his posters designed by his close friends, including Jeff Koons, Christopher Wool, Lawrence Weiner, Rosemary Trockel, Franz West and Cosima von Bonin.

This collection of 171 posters and 180 invitation cards is one of the largest of its kind and offers a unique insight into the mind of the artist. Though Kippenberger was prolific as a painter, sculptor, musician and writer, the posters and invitations cards he created constitute a significant body of work, and act as a visual autobiography that spans his career. Typically created as screen prints or lithographs in standard advertisement sizes, they were used to promote a wide variety of events, from art exhibitions to the parties he hosted. In these posters and invitations cards, we see the full extent of Kippenberger’s artistic curiosity and quick-wittedness, as well as his creativity and ambition.
