James Roundell

Director, James Roundell

James Roundell joined the firm in 1995, bringing with him his extensive expertise in Impressionist and Modern pictures. In 1973 he began his twenty-two year career at Christie's London, initially working as an expert in English 18th and 19th Century Drawings and Watercolours. He later became Director in charge of the Old Master and Modern Prints department and then, in 1986, was appointed Head of the Impressionist and Modern Pictures department. During this time he organised the sale of Van Gogh's Sunflowers ($35,00,000) as well as many of the record-breaking sales of the 1989-1990 boom period. Since establishing the Impressionist and Modern division at Dickinson he has continued to undertake extensive appraisal work and handle sales of major Impressionist and Modern works.

Mr. Roundell was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge where he obtained a B.A. Honours degree in Art History. He has published a monograph on the 19th century watercolourist and topographical artist Thomas Shorter Boys and is a keen collector of Old Master and Modern British prints as well as 19th century English watercolours. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Tate Patrons and advises on acquisitions for a number of private European foundations.
